Most people try to be perfectionists. They believe that a person is a failure without attaining perfection. It is a good idea to do your best. Yet, it is problematic if this best is confused with being perfect. Such an inclination towards perfection adds to the fear of mistakes, thereby increasing stress and anxiety ultimately leading to depression.
Striving to be a perfectionist, you become paranoid about making mistakes. You get used to procrastination as you wait for the last moment to avoid mistakes. We are happier to blame on the paucity of time whenever the quality of work is questioned. “I should have done better if I had more time” is the common reply.
What people fail to notice is that relationships are also at risk. The life of a perfectionist is characterized by high expectations about everything and even other people. When expectations are not met, relationships head towards the risky zone of separation. They get to demand more from others and are often ignorant about the situations that might prevent others from being their best.
You can strive to perform better by avoiding these perfectionist woes and looking at the positive side of committing mistakes.
First, identify if you are a perfectionist or a wannabe perfectionist. Examine your thoughts regularly and identify areas that are irrational and impractical. Most often, our fear of mistakes and disastrous consequences is one such irrational thought that does no good. The other characteristic trait of such people is to have an extremist view of the world. The world is either only good for them. They do not believe in the degrees of success.
Change your beliefs. You need to reinforce the fact that things are going to be better and the worst is not going to happen. You must consistently repeat sending the positive messages to your mind so that negativity is dominated. It does not happen in an overnight. You need to accelerate this process by thinking positively whenever possible.
Break free from your fears by experimenting and experiencing. Do the things that you normally fear about. Seek the help of friends and colleagues to assist you until you gain some confidence. An employee feared speaking to his boss about a raise. The boss assumed that the employee is happy with the current pay package. The employee fears that such a request might hurt his relationship with the boss. However, with due encouragement from a colleague, he went ahead and made a polite request for a raise. You guessed it right and he was promoted along with the raise.
Fear inhibits you from taking on new challenges at work. Employees who are passionate for challenges are wanted by more billion dollar companies across the globe. If you are ready to accept a new challenge and you succeed, it enhances self-confidence thereby adding to your self esteem. Finally, this chain reaction boosts your performance.
“Mistakes are the portals for discovery”, said writer James Joyce. Pencillin, Coca Cola, and Post-It Notes are inventions that happened just because of mistakes. It is time for us to understand the significance of mistakes and commit mistakes responsibly to build self esteem and boost performance.
